What is Walking?

Part walk, part theatrical experience, Walking is a major event taking place on the north Norfolk coast from August 20 until September 2. A collaboration between the Norfolk & Norwich Festival and the internationally acclaimed theatre director Robert Wilson, it is a highlight of the London 2012 Festival, a 12 week nationwide celebration running from 21 June until 9 September 2012 bringing together leading artists from across the world with the very best from the UK

Walking is set over a three mile route and takes in a variety of terrain, including dunes, woodland, meadow and beach. A series of gigantic installations will punctuate the route.

Audience members will walk in a continuous line in single file and at a deliberately slow pace, allowing space and time to observe and reflect upon their natural surroundings and the installations along the way.

Walking will create a powerful and quietly thrilling event in this beautiful landscape. Much as Holkham and the surrounding area is a popular holiday destination, Walking can be described as a holiday for the mind, creating space and time for total ‘mental relaxation’.

Walking was first presented at the Oerol Festival in the Netherlands in 2008.

Where is Walking taking place?

Walking is set amidst the landscape of the Holkham Estate near Wells-next-the-Sea in north Norfolk. The postcode is NR23 1RG.  Some stretches of the route are not normally accessible to the public. Take a look at the stunning scenery on this stretch of the north Norfolk coast

How much time will I need?

You should allow up to five hours. Due to its slow pace, the walking part of Walking will take approximately 3.5 hours to complete. You will be asked to turn up 45 minutes prior to your booked time slot and there will be some travel time back to the car-park from the finishing point of the walk.

Will I get a rest?

You will arrive at a rest area halfway through the Walking route where you will be given an apple and a bottle of water. You will also able to use toilet facilities at this point

How fit do I need to be?

You should be able to walk three miles over a variety of terrain.  The pace of the walk is deliberately slow, following a set route. Due to the undulating nature of the route, we regret that Walking is not suitable for wheelchair users nor those with significant mobility issues.

Are children allowed to participate?

Due to the length of time involved and its reflective nature, Walking is not suitable for children under 14 years old

Are dogs allowed on the route?

We regret that dogs are not allowed on the Walking site.

What do I need to take with me?

Please bring weather-suitable walking clothing, sturdy shoes and a bottle of water.  The artists respectfully request that you leave your mobile phone, camera and other non essential personal belongings at home. However, if you are unable to do this, when you arrive at the site box office you will be asked to hand over your car keys and other personal belongings – which will  be stored safely and can be collected on completion of Walking. Please ensure you are well fed and watered before you start.

Will Walking go ahead in the event of bad weather?

Walking will continue in all weather conditions. In the event of severe weather warnings please go to our website for updated information
