Future and Form

What will writing look like in 50 years? What role will authors play in the future? This multi-installation virtual and physical exhibition, stemming from UEA’s world-renowned creative writing programme, seeks to address this very question in exciting and illuminating ways. The exhibition, involving performances, walks and digital experiences, explores the very interface between contemporary literature and storytelling and creative technology.

This is where virtual reality, augmented reality and AI meet some of the sharpest and most innovative writers on the planet.

The works, in development for over a year and on display for the very first time at NNF, will lead you through extraordinary new literary experiences and virtual and physical realities. The six works on interactive display address issues of provenance, history, ecology, inclusivity and ultimately engagement. They tell urgent stories in new ways.

Future and Form brings together international UEA alumni writers Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀, Mona Arshi, Tash Aw, Imogen Hermes Gowar, Mitch Johnson and James McDermott with UEA faculty, creative technologists Guildhall Live Events and Mutiny, and key regional cultural organisations and schools.

The works will take you on a journey from medieval Norwich, to the wilds of the North Norfolk Coast, via Nigeria and Malaysia. They look to the past and the future and suggest prototypes for what the reading and the book might look like in the years and decades to come.
