Norwich Cathedral

Tickets: Free (please book a ticket)

Norwich Cathedral was founded in 1096 as a Benedictine Monastery. The Rule of St Benedict, with its emphasis on Worship, Hospitality and Learning, still informs the Cathedral’s mission and way of life to this day. Benedict’s Rule contains the earliest known reference to the monastic office of Compline, or night prayer: the final service of the waking day.

The Girl Choristers, Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars of Norwich Cathedral Choir will sing this centuries-old monastic office in the stunning candlelit surroundings of Norwich Cathedral. Much of the service is sung to the ancient plainsong chant, heard alongside choral works by by Morten Lauridsen, Neil Cox, Gustav Holst and Edvard Grieg.

Lasting approximately 45 minutes, this special Festival service gives the perfect opportunity to enjoy choral music stretching across the centuries alongside the peace and stillness of the Cathedral at nightfall.

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for nearly 250 years. Through our arts education work, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk.

2021 offers hope for the creative sector, and as an arts charity, we are redoubling our efforts to share meaningful art and cultural experiences with people across Norfolk. We rely on support from our audiences, partners and supporters to continue to bring innovative and inspirational programming and commissioning to the region, and to empower those who might not otherwise have access to the life-changing power of the arts.
