WEAK TRANSMISSION

Tim Spooner with Matthew Robins

WEDNESDAY 26 MAY – SATURDAY 29 MAY, throughout the day

This is a past event which has now ended.

In the historic prison cells below Norwich Guildhall, electric animal-aerials live out their existence, trying to receive signals from the outside world, transmitting and imagining between themselves. This fragile species tries, fails and changes; playing at being trapped and playing at escaping.

Our relationship to ideas of isolation, autonomy and technological communication has complexified and gained layers of new meaning over the last year, and this work is a response to that situation.

Built of fragile materials and old technology, the animals behave unpredictably, travelling through the spaces and interacting, transmitting images from inside and outside the cells.

Small bubbles and family groups are invited one at a time to explore this strange, quietly chaotic installation of moving sculptures within the confined, charged atmosphere of the prison cells.

A Norfolk & Norwich Festival commission

A development of a work first commissioned by Westflügel Leipzig and Schaubude Berlin in 2020

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

This year we begin an exciting new initiative, Festival Connect & Create that will bring creative opportunities to those schools and communities with least provision. Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.

Please consider donating to support and develop this work. With your help we can increase access to the life changing power of the arts.
