Writer and psychologist Charles Fernyhough chairs a discussion with Professor of Disability Research Tom Shakespeare and writer Preti Taneja on how books not only help us understand the diverse lives of others, but can shake up our very sense of self.

Charles Fernyhough
Charles Fernyhough is a writer and psychologist. His book The Baby in the Mirror was translated into eight languages and his book on autobiographical memory, Pieces of Light was shortlisted for the 2013 Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books. He blogs for the US magazine Psychology Today and has made numerous radio appearances in the UK and US.
Tom Shakespeare
Tom Shakespeare is Professor of Disability Research at Norwich Medical School, UEA. He has written or edited a dozen books on disability and on genetics. He has been a stand-up comedian on the disability arts circuit, authored three TV documentaries, and did a one-man show at Newcastle’s Live Theatre. He is contributing to Charles Fernyhough’s edited collection Others.
Preti Taneja
Preti Taneja has worked as an international human rights editor, reporter and filmmaker and her work has been published in the Guardian and Open Democracy. In 2014 Kumkum Malhotra won the Gatehouse Press New Fictions Prize. She is the editor of Visual Verse and was selected as an AHRC/ BBC Radio 3 New Generation Thinker for 2014.
