A Sermon With Music
A fundraising sermon with musical performances, to raise money for the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.
An unnamed visitor to Norwich who attended the sermon in 1783 spoke of the temporary orchestra stage built in front of the organ ‘in the style of church concerts abroad’.
The service was said to be a very fine one with well performed music.
Also taking place in Norwich this year:
Norwich was becoming a nation of shopkeepers. The 1783 Directory lists 40 grocers, 30 butchers, 60 bakers, 30 drapers and mercers, 24 hosiers, hatters and milliners, 12 booksellers and 6 chemists.
