A Sermon With Music

This year was a fundraising sermon with musical performances, to raise money for the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

At the Cathedral, Master of Choristers Edward Beckwith is admonished for ‘extreme negligence’ in his post, and his son, John Beckwith is brought in to share the duties. John Beckwith would go on to run the annual sermon from the following year and later set up the Grand Musical Festivals of 1788 and 1790.

Also taking place in Norwich at this time:
From the mid 1780’s concerts and dances took place in the Assembly House. There were also displays of gymnastics, juggling and strongmen.
