The Second Grand Musical Festival

Following the success of the annual fundraising sermons and three-day ‘Grand Musical Festival’ in 1788, another was staged in 1790, once again organised by John Beckwith and believed to be a success.

This time, musicians included soprano Nancy Storace, an associate of none other than Mozart.

No further festivals were staged until 1802, possibly because of the unrest in Europe with the French Revolution.

The annual sermons continued regardless, although in 1790 no music by Handel was featured which had a negative impact on the amount donated. The rehearsal time for musicians was also now cut to just one session.
