Grand Musical Festival At Theatre Royal

The Grand Musical Festival of 1809 broke with tradition and used the Theatre Royal instead of St Andrew’s Hall for evening performances.

An organ was installed for the occasion and the whole stage was taken up by the orchestra, the theatre turned into a concert hall with spectacular effect.

Ticket prices ranged between 6s and 2s.

The same year, John Beckwith passed away and his son, John Charles Beckwith, took over the responsibility of arranging the music for the annual hospital services.

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for over 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.
