The Grand Ball
The 1824 Festival having been so successful, there was much enthusiasm for the follow up event three years later.
Once again, Sir George Smart presided over the concerts and the week’s pleasures included promenade concerts, marching bands and the Grand Ball – a feature which would be a regular fixture in itself.
Attendance was up on the previous year, and a healthy profit of £1,672 left to the Hospital with a guarantor system now in place to relieve the Hospital of any potential financial obligations. It was estimated that the festival generated around £50,000 for the local economy as visitors to the events spent their money in the city’s shops and pubs.
