A Year With No Profit
A four day music festival, as part of a run of triennial events.
The 1836 Festival ended up being Sir George Smart’s last visit to Norwich. Unfortunately, for the first time a profit had not been achievable, and a rift broke out between Smart and the management committee over who was responsible. The whole affair was played out in the local press and the Hospital board, not wanting to get embroiled in the controversy, took the decision to stop getting involved in the organization of the Festival, leaving it entirely to the local voluntary committees.
