A four day music festival, as part of a run of triennial events.
The existence of the Festival was called into doubt following poor receipts in 1854 and the increased opportunities for families to travel to London by train to attend concerts. Thanks to the persistence of the Committee and the Festival Chorus a profit was achieved once again.
Edward Copeman
Dr Edward Copeman was Festival Chairman between 1856 and 1876.
He was a physician at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital as well as a keen amateur cellist. Shortly before the 1857 Festival, he became chairman of the Festival, a post he would hold for twenty years. Amongst his medical specialisms were gynaecology and diphtheria, and he once claimed ‘prevention is better than cure… ‘good diet, pure air, temperance and exercise.’
