A Break With Tradition

A four day music festival, as part of a run of triennial events.

A break with tradition occurred when it was decided that the Festival would no longer be held with the primary purpose of raising money for charity. Instead, the overarching aim would be artistic and if there happened to be any money leftover this would be donated.

This decision gave the organizing committee the freedom to be more adventurous and the resulting festival was one of the best around. Star soloists included violinist Pablo Sarasate and pianist Ignacy Paderewski, both of whom drew in bumper crowds. New works premiered included Edward German’s Norwich Symphony and Paderewski’s Polish Fantasy.

St Andrew’s Hall was lit with electricity rather than gas for the first time at the 1893 festival.

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for over 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

This year we begin an exciting new initiative, Festival Connect & Create that will bring creative opportunities to those schools and communities with least provision. Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.
