Festival of Britain Celebrations
The Triennial Festival which was due to be held in 1950 moved by a year in order to coincide with wider Festival of Britain celebrations. Norwich was one of many cities to put on a huge range of activities and events, which went far beyond just the concert hall, spilling out into the city streets and parks, bringing positivity and an optimistic atmosphere after many difficult years.
Princess Elizabeth opened the Festival from the balcony of City Hall and also the Colman Art Gallery at the Castle Museum; returning musicians for the Triennial celebrations included Sir Thomas Beecham, popular pianist Dame Myra Hess and Kathleen Ferrier.
