1961

A New Name

An eight day music festival, as part of a run of triennial events.

To reflect the expanding scope of the Festival, it was re-named ‘Norfolk & Norwich Festival of Music and the Arts including the Triennial Festival’ in 1961.

With jazz growing in popularity, John Dankworth was on the bill and the Maddermarket Theatre cemented itself as the setting for new drama productions.

Another new initiative was the ‘Festival Centre’, launched at the Maid’s Head Hotel – a place for performers and audiences to meet and share a drink together after performances; this quickly became a popular feature of subsequent years, although it was to move to the Maddermarket from 1964.

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for over 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

This year we begin an exciting new initiative, Festival Connect & Create that will bring creative opportunities to those schools and communities with least provision. Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.
