1982
An Expanded Fringe Programme
A ten day music festival, as part of a run of triennial events.
Building on the success of 1979, the 1982 festival had an expanded fringe programme, designed with an emphasis on family events and spontaneous activities.
In the concert hall, one of the largest festival concerts to be held in city to date took place at the Cathedral in a performance of Berlioz’s Grande Messe des Morts. Del Mar conducted the 130 musicians of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and 180 members alongside four assistant conductors and CCTV cameras in order to see everyone at the same time. The Cathedral was said to ‘shake to its foundations’ in the performance.
For the first time a non-musical commission was awarded – a sculpture by Liliane Lijn called Extrapolation. The piece, inspired by leaves of a book, was unveiled by George Melly and sat outside the former Norwich Central Library; it is now part of the Sainsbury Centre sculpture trail.
