1998

First Performance From The Nimmo Twins

The Festival was awarded ‘Arts for Everyone’ lottery funding enabling it to expand over the next three years. One of the events to come from this was a commission for former Kinks frontman Ray Davies, who tried his hand at large-scale composition with a work called Flatlands.

Other household names included stand-up from Paul Merton and Jaspar Carrott, and poetry from John Cooper Clarke.

1998 also saw the first Festival appearance from the Nimmo Twins, who were to become a festival favourite.

Another initiative now possible from the new funding was the launch of a short lived mini-festival of dance called ‘Leap’.

Sir Nicholas Bacon becomes the new Festival Chairman.

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for over 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.
