How did you find your way into dance, theatre and storytelling?
From Outreach to Centre Stage
Sadiq’s journey into the world of circus is anything but conventional. Initially working in participation and outreach for the Children’s Commissioner of Scotland, he engaged in various youth work roles. However, a redundancy at 22 prompted a significant career shift. A chance encounter with a circus school in Sheffield ignited a passion that transformed a summer pastime into a decade-long vocation. Since graduating from London’s National Centre for Circus Arts in 2017, Sadiq has showcased his talents globally, performing in countries including New Zealand, Australia, Malta, and across Europe. His diverse portfolio spans performances tailored for children, families, adults, and specific community groups, reflecting his versatile artistry.
In recent years, Sadiq has dedicated his craft to amplifying queer narratives within non-verbal physical theatre and circus. Drawing from personal experiences and broader research, he addresses pressing community issues, aiming to foster unity, empowerment, and dismantle societal barriers. As a queer individual living with HIV, Sadiq channels his unique perspective into his art, believing that his true strength lies in this intersection of identities.
Introduce Tell Me
Tell Me stands as a testament to Sadiq’s commitment to storytelling that challenges and enlightens. Supported by Without Walls and co-commissioned by Norfolk & Norwich Festival, Certain Blacks, Inspirate, and Birmingham Weekender, the show delves into the complexities of disclosing one’s HIV status. Performed on three scaffold cubes, it seeks to destigmatize HIV through a blend of contemporary circus and dance, offering audiences an intimate exploration of human connection and resilience.
What was the initial inspiration for the work?
A Personal Journey of Resilience
In January 2014, Sadiq was diagnosed with HIV. The initial period was marked by intense physical illness, which he initially mistook for a severe hangover. Prompted by knowledgeable friends, he sought medical attention and received his diagnosis shortly thereafter. Thanks to timely intervention and medication, Sadiq achieved an undetectable viral load within months, meaning he cannot transmit the virus. This journey led him through phases of shame and stigma, ultimately arriving at a place of empowerment and control. His openness about his status has been instrumental in challenging misconceptions and fostering understanding.

Advocacy Beyond the Stage
Beyond his performances, Sadiq has been a vocal advocate for HIV awareness and de-stigmatization. In 2016, he was crowned Mr. Gay Great Britain and placed fifth in Mr. Gay World, utilizing these platforms to address HIV-related stigma. Collaborations with organizations like Terrence Higgins Trust and GMFA further underscore his dedication to the cause. Tell Me continues this advocacy, spotlighting modern-day activists and emphasizing the importance of community support. The show notably incorporates a female perspective, in partnership with Positively UK, an organization supporting women living with HIV. This collaboration highlights the evolving demographics of HIV transmission and underscores the message that this is a collective, human issue.
