Baque Luar

This is a past event which has now ended.

A collective of female and non-binary vocalists and percussionists hailing from diverse backgrounds, Baque Luar are united by their love of Brazilian and Afro Brazilian roots music. Meaning ’moonlit beat’, the group combines original multivocal compositions and arrangements with powerful percussive grooves. This unique mixture has led to acclaimed live performances across the UK.

Baque Luar creates music which honours feminine power and creativity, acknowledges struggles against oppression and praises nature at this critical ecological moment. They explore how ancestral rhythms open space for us to feel deeply connected to nature, spirit, ancestors, each other and the earth, and how they can hold us in our search for rooted creative expression. Their music brings together songs and rhythms from the rich soundworlds of maracatu, coco, ciranda, congado, caboclinho, Candombe Mineiro, manguebeat, as well as sacred rhythms of Afro-Brazilian Candomblé.

Baque Luar are a key force within a vital cultural movement in the UK and beyond, working to reconnect music with nature and reawaken a cultural imagination which cares for our living planet and all her inhabitants. Through their creative practice, the group confronts the legacies of patriarchal and colonial power systems which continue to divide us from each other, disrupt our collective wellbeing and prevent us from the most important work, that of loving this earth and belonging within the family of all beings. In the face of systems of ecocide, patriarchy, capitalism and neo-colonialism, Baque Luar strives to renew and repair the bonds of sisterhood, kinship, nature-connection and cross-cultural community-that have been damaged. They are guided by the creation of culture, beauty, rhythmic and musical practices in service to collective wellbeing.

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for over 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

This year we begin an exciting new initiative, Festival Connect & Create that will bring creative opportunities to those schools and communities with least provision. Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.

Please consider donating to support and develop this work. With your help we can increase access to the life changing power of the arts.
