Launch of the Writing Places anthology and chapbook
Norfolk & Norwich Festival 2020 has been cancelled
It is with regret that we have taken the very difficult but ultimately inevitable decision to cancel the 2020 Norfolk & Norwich Festival.
With the rapidly escalating health-crisis and with the safety of our audiences, staff and artists at heart, we have taken the decision that it is impossible for us to deliver the Festival this May.
If you have booked a ticket for the Festival, you do not need to do anything. You are entitled to a refund and we will be in touch soon. Please bear with us during this difficult time. If you have the capacity to make a donation of part or all of your ticket value, we would be extremely grateful – it would help ensure we’re well-placed to support artists and be able to present future Festivals.
An examination of two very different cities that are both home to radical re-thinkers of the literary arts. Our guest speakers will explore writing and place through the lens of two new publications; Writing Places (edited by Arunava Sinha, published by Seagull Books in Kolkata); and the Writing Places chapbook (published by the UEA Publishing Project). Their conversation will be chaired by Kate Griffin, Associate Programme Director at the National Centre for Writing.
Writing Places is a creative writing and literary translation project. For two years, we exchanged writers and photographers, ran writing and translation workshops, and hosted events in our respective cities. This evening we will celebrate the two publications that have come out of the exchange.

This collection draws together stories, poems, photographs, memoirs, confessions and investigations from some of the most imaginative writers and photographers working in the UK and India today to create a journey between the two lands that you can savour with your mind, heart and body. A unique work for armchair travellers, Writing Places lets us move between two countries that share a long history in a first-of-its-kind collection of words and images.
Featuring an introduction by Arunava Sinha and contributions from Lucy Hughes-Hallet, Pia Ghosh-Roy, Tiffany Atkinson, Parni Ray, Vesna Goldsworthy, Somrita Urni Ganguly, Shreya Sen-Handley, Sreedevi Nair, Sarah Bower, Mandakranta Sen, Chirodeep Chaudhuri, Jerry Pinto, Paramita Satpathy Tripathy, Kate Griffin, Sirsho Bandyopadhyay, Anjali Joseph, Sarah Hickson, Samit Basu and Duncan Large.
Writing Places chapbook
Published by the UEA Publishing Project
Aspiring writers and translators at the University of East Anglia, Jadavpur University and elsewhere came together for Writing Places Online. Tutors Tiffany Atkinson, Sarah Bower, Rimi Chatterjee and Arunava Sinha offered writing prompts inspired by Norwich and Kolkata. This chapbook showcases some of the pieces that came out of the exchange.
