With terms like ‘starving artist’ and ‘exposure work’ doing the rounds, money has always been an issue in the cultural sector, particularly in recent years. Artists want to know where the money is and how to get it. But because funding models and sources are many and varied, there is no one-fits-all answer.
This session is here to demystify the world of cultural funding, a literal ‘Funding for Dummies’.
We will explore the following types of funding:
- Arts Council England project grants
- Arts Council England DYCP (Develop Your Creative Practice)
- National and local trust and foundation pots
- Organisational artist residencies and bursary schemes
- Local government grants
Then we’ll discuss where to find different funding opportunities that are both regional and national. And most importantly, how to put together a successful application.

Artist Bio
Mark Finbow is Creative Director of The Garage Norwich, where he leads one of the UK’s largest arts participation programmes, alongside a twenty-year career as a theatre maker and filmmaker. A graduate of LAMDA and alumnus of the National Youth Theatre, he has developed projects with organisations including Eastern Angles, Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, Norwich Arts Centre and The Seagull.
Alongside his creative practice, Mark has secured funding for theatre, film and artist development projects from Arts Council England, local authorities and numerous grant-making trusts and foundations, creating employment and training opportunities for emerging regional creatives. His work spans touring theatre, independent film and participatory arts, with a particular focus on creating career pathways for early-career creatives.
Today, he continues to develop ambitious theatre and film projects across East Anglia while championing opportunities for the next generation of regional artists.
