James McVinnie & Tristan Perich
Infinity Gradient
Saturday 9 May, 7.30pm
Norwich Cathedral
Tickets: £10.00 - £25.00
We announce the first performance from one of our 2026 resident artists, James McVinnie. Infinity Gradient is a grand collaboration between McVinnie and composer Tristan Perich, scored for solo organ and 100 speakers in 1bit audio.
A remarkable work with few precedents, it is a duet between two musical instruments millennia apart in conception. The organ is a wind and keyboard instrument hybrid whose basic sound production principles have remained unchanged for centuries, offering a kaleidoscopic array of pitch and tone colour.
Perich matches its scale with a tiered electronic orchestra of 100 speakers producing primitive electronic sound. In this massive multi-channel setup, each speaker plays its own individually composed line of music, synthesised by custom 1-bit electronics designed and built by Perich.
The synthesis of its sounds will fill Norwich Cathedral with an immense, unique tonality.
‘…the whole epic enterprise was mesmeric in impact and sonic variety.’ The Guardian
