Night Pipes: Olivier Messiaen Organ Works

This is a past event which has now ended.

Olivier Messiaen

L’Apparation de l’Eglise eternelle (9’)

Diptyque (11’)

L’Ascension (26’)

A night-time meditation featuring music by French composer Olivier Messiaen, performed on the newly rebuilt organ of Norwich Cathedral.

Cathedral Master of Music, Ashley Grote, plays three towering works of the organ repertoire, displaying the full range of the instrument, from the quietest whisper to the mightiest thunder. Rebuilt over 2022-23, Norwich Cathedral has one of the largest pipe organs in the country, featuring an incredible 5,767 pipes that range from ten metres to just an inch long.

Large-screen projection will capture Ashley’s manoeuvrings at the organ console, and we invite the audience to move around the building to experience the full spectrum of the instrument’s sound, uniquely fine-tuned to this most extraordinary building.

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

This year we begin an exciting new initiative, Festival Connect & Create that will bring creative opportunities to those schools and communities with least provision. Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.

Please consider donating to support and develop this work. With your help we can increase access to the life changing power of the arts.
