Louis Nixon
Off Earth
Tuesday 12-Friday 15 May, 12-5pm
Immersive Visualisation and Simulation Lab, Havers Road
Free event
Off-Earth Is a film and sculpture installation by Artist Louis Nixon, which explores human presence in space through objects that have been accidentally dropped or deliberately placed in space by the 642 people who have travelled there.
The film contains a collection and archive of these objects assembled through historical records, first-person accounts, mission films and observations from earth telescopes. The objects themselves have then been reconstructed and presented alongside recordings of sounds from the Golden Record which was sent on the Voyager mission in 1977.
Louis Nixon studied painting at Chelsea School of Art and Sculpture at the Slade School of Art London. His practice encompasses painting, sculpture, installation and experimental film, often presented as multi-media installations in galleries and public spaces. Nixon co-founded the collective Space Explorations in 1990 and, as artist, director and curator, participated in large-scale interventions in response to specific sites. Since 2001 he has worked independently and exhibited widely in the U.K, Europe, Australia, Chile and Hong Kong.
In 2021 Nixon was awarded a £781,000 AHRC grant to establish Norwich University of the Arts’ Immersive Visualisation and Simulation Lab
