Spare Tyre

On the Beach

SATURDAY 25 MAY, 11.30AM & 2.30PM

St George's Theatre

On The Beach is an interactive sensory experience for people living with dementia and their carers, created by participatory theatre company Spare Tyre. An intimate performance for audiences of six to eight (plus carers), On The Beach is suitable for individuals at all stages of the dementia pathway. Join us for a day in the life of a working beach, as we explore its myths, magic, perils and ever-changing beauty through dance, music and visual storytelling.

In 2024, we are still within touching and telling distance of people who worked the shores before plastic, whose hand-working skills are still evident from boat-building to fish-mongering, net-mending to knot-tying. We rediscover the people who haul and heave, knit and knot, wait and ponder; people for whom the songs and tales of the sea are a lived reality.

Inspired by rich traditions the world over, join us On The Beach: a place of loss, love and unfathomable strangeness, of unexpected joy and the heartbeat of home.

“Our group thoroughly enjoyed themselves and so did we. They all said they loved being involved and also how calming and relaxing the experience was, which is wonderful” – Community dementia group co-ordinators

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

This year we begin an exciting new initiative, Festival Connect & Create that will bring creative opportunities to those schools and communities with least provision. Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.

Please consider donating to support and develop this work. With your help we can increase access to the life changing power of the arts.
