Sounding It Out

Britten Pears Arts, a pioneering music and heritage charity, is nestled on the breathtaking site of Snape Maltings, host to our final artist event of the season. This session brings sound artist Johann Don-Daniel’s cutting-edge digital practice to this renowned classical music venue, for regional creatives to be inspired, informed and connected with like-minded peers.

The event includes a guided tour of the site, taking in the open skies, marshland and golden reed beds. Johann will capture sounds across the site, reflecting both its industrial past as a malt works and its present life as a classical music venue.

A practical workshop will follow, exploring sound-making through a range of mediums and technologies. Johann will also discuss his practice and the socially engaged work he’s delivered across the region over many years.

This session is open to all socially engaged artists and creatives interested in developing audio into their practice, and looking for new ideas and stimulus.

Artist Bio

Johann is predominantly sound/4D artist interested in sonic sculpture, materiality, ecology, and the manipulation of sound through distorting technologies, drums, beat narrative, and performance. His practice combines handmade instruments, MIDI controllers, electronic components, and sculptural elements to create interactive installations, performances and soundscapes. Johann works as an associate artist with The Sainsbury Centre and Groundwork Gallery, among others. Alongside his role as drummer/engineer in the band LAPAN, he integrates collaborative methodologies that foster dialogue through interactive sound experiences, bringing together multiple strands of his artistic practice.
