Norfolk & Norwich Festival 2020 has been cancelled

It is with regret that we have taken the very difficult but ultimately inevitable decision to cancel the 2020 Norfolk & Norwich Festival.

With the rapidly escalating health-crisis and with the safety of our audiences, staff and artists at heart, we have taken the decision that it is impossible for us to deliver the Festival this May.

If you have booked a ticket for the Festival, you do not need to do anything. You are entitled to a refund and we will be in touch soon. Please bear with us during this difficult time. If you have the capacity to make a donation of part or all of your ticket value, we would be extremely grateful – it would help ensure we’re well-placed to support artists and be able to present future Festivals.

Studio Cité is a travelling art fair of ten performative installations by Benjamin Vandewalle. Each in their specific way, the installations bring the gaze of the theatre to the public space. Rather than, like in theatre, creating a piece from scratch with carefully selected set, lights and bodies, Benjamin Vandewalle works primarily with that which is already there: the streets, the architectural elements that compose it, passers-by, maybe a tree, the weather of today, etc. The ‘real’ world doesn’t stay outside. Instead, we are invited to bend ourselves differently around the things and beings that surrounds us. The proscenium that usually divides the scene and the audience disappears.

Spectators are pulled in, their bodies become a mobile auditorium offering moving and changing views on what’s happening. This shift from the classical theatre dispositive to devices that (re)organize the gaze of the spectator generates experiences of perception that deviate from the usual perspective.

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

This year we begin an exciting new initiative, Festival Connect & Create that will bring creative opportunities to those schools and communities with least provision. Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.

Please consider donating to support and develop this work. With your help we can increase access to the life changing power of the arts.
