Ambience and stillness, words and sound, light and dark, wild and calm… this newly adapted version of Lotte Betts-Dean’s Voice Electric explores the vivid colours of the amplified human voice as it oscillates between states of being.

Mezzo-soprano Betts-Dean sings works for solo amplified voice with electronics, from groundbreaking 20th Century works by Scelsi, Feldman, and Schwitters, to 21st Century pieces that draw on medieval plainchant, experimental electronica and techno.

Receiving its highly-charged debut at the Aldeburgh Festival in 2022, Voice Electric is in part a tribute to Lotte’s lifelong fascination with electronic music, as well as a reflection and celebration of the medium of solo voice and fixed electronic audio in modern composition.

Alongside works by Stuart MacRae, Erin Gee and Caroline Shaw, this freshly updated version of the show curated especially for Norfolk & Norwich Festival features works by Cassandra Miller, Georges Aperghis and Enno Poppe as well as a UK premiere from Sara Glojnarić.

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for over 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

This year we begin an exciting new initiative, Festival Connect & Create that will bring creative opportunities to those schools and communities with least provision. Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.

Please consider donating to support and develop this work. With your help we can increase access to the life changing power of the arts.
