The award-winning Astatine Trio, BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists for 2025-27 and formerly mentored by the legendary pianist Alfred Brendel, perform a programme of late Schubert and Takemitsu. The trio’s accolades include second prize and the special prize for best performance of the prizewinning work of the composition competition at the 2025 Franz Schubert and Modern Music Competition in Graz – becoming the first UK-based ensemble to win a main prize in the competition’s history.

Written in the last year of his life and considered one of the pinnacles of the chamber music repertoire, Schubert’s radiant E flat major Trio is a vast and sweeping masterpiece which takes the listener on an engrossing journey through darkness and towards light. This is preceded by Takemitsu’s colourful and meditative Between Tides, inspired by the constant and mesmerising motion of the sea’s tides and filled with evocative water imagery.

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for over 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

This year we begin an exciting new initiative, Festival Connect & Create that will bring creative opportunities to those schools and communities with least provision. Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.

Please consider donating to support and develop this work. With your help we can increase access to the life changing power of the arts.
