Around the World

Deva Mahal portrait

The Festival programme brings together artists, performers and inspiration from across the globe. At Norwich Playhouse, Jyotsna Srikanth & Bollywood Brass Band come together for an evening of compulsively danceable Bollywood rhythms and prodigious Syrian musician Maya Youssef will be showcasing her virtuosic gifts and innovative approach to playing the qanun – a traditional Middle Eastern plucked zither.

From across the pond we have the sensational female singers Mary Chapin Carpenter, Amanda Palmer and Deva Mahal each bringing their own unique sound to the Festival. And West African singers Mamani Keita, Rokia Konem and Awa Sangho – part of all female supergroup Les Amazones d’Afrique – take to the stage at The Adnams Spiegeltent for a late night gig bringing together funk, blues and dub.

Coming from Europe are award-winning Portuguese film director Marco Martins with a new piece of theatre inspired by the stories of Portuguese immigrants in Great Yarmouth  and artist Marco Barotti, who will be visiting us from Italy and bringing along  The Woodpeckers. These alluring android birds transform invisible radiations into audible and visible acoustic drumming patterns, similar to those of real woodpeckers.

Arts make life better

Norfolk & Norwich Festival brings tens of thousands of people together in celebration – it has been doing this for over 250 years. Through our May Festival and our year-round arts education work, focusing on children and young people, we lead and support celebration, creativity and curiosity in communities across Norfolk and the region.

This year we begin an exciting new initiative, Festival Connect & Create that will bring creative opportunities to those schools and communities with least provision. Creativity transforms people’s lives. It builds cohesive communities, develops vital skills and supports health and wellbeing. We want more people to have access to creative opportunities.

Please consider donating to support and develop this work. With your help we can increase access to the life changing power of the arts.
